The Colorado High Country poses a grave danger to the unwary traveler during the winter months due to the unstable snowpack and resulting avalanche activity. Colorado leads the nation in number of reported avalanches and avalanche fatalities. The AlpenQuest Level 1 course teaches participants how to recognize and avoid avalanche danger, avalanche survival techniques if you are caught in one, and how to properly perform a search and rescue in the event of an avalanche burial. This detailed course covers avalanche phenomenon; snowpack analysis and the various types of snow metamorphism, including the dreaded but very unique snow crystal formation known as depth hoar; weather factors contributing to avalanche instability; terrain analysis; stability evaluation; slab avalanches and the avalanche path; human factors and risk assessment; route finding and decision making; transceiver practice and search and rescue.

This professional level four-part course will take you through an in-depth program of classroom and field sessions covering all aspects of avalanche awareness training. Attendance of the entire series is required to receive a certificate of completion. Course fee includes avalanche transceiver and probe pole rental, book, and hand-outs. A must for all winter enthusiasts! Cost for four-part session: $189.00 per person. Minimum participants: 5.
